Get to know the Earth take a peek at the microscope!

Date

Description

Since 2013, the Croatian Geological Society (HGD) has been conducting in numerous schools, museums and geoparks an educational interactive workshop “Get to know the Earth take a peek at the microscope!” aimed at popularizing geology as a fundamental natural science. Participants through interaction with expert leaders and the study of samples can gain insight into what all geology as a science deals with.

Topics to be covered in the workshop:

  • Mineralogy Through various samples we will see what minerals really are and how they differ in color, shape, density and other properties. Although some of them can be classified as gemstones, we will learn that not only beauty is important for minerals, but also their wide application in everyday life.
  • Petrology We will learn how rocks are formed and how they divide and differ according to their origin. We will discover what we can see in the rocks and what types of rocks we can find in Croatia.
  • Paleontology What does paleontology do and what are fossils? We will find out which animals and plants can be found preserved in the rocks, how they were preserved and what their remains tell us about the past.
  • The history of Earth Earth’s history, which began 4.6 billion years ago, is dynamic and full of events that shaped it. By passing through the geological lenta of time, we will become familiar with all the important developments in the past of our planet.
  • Microscope The most interesting thing is often invisible to the naked eye. In geology we use microscopes to observe various minerals, thin sandstones and microfossils whose details would otherwise not be noticeable.

The workshop is performed by expert geologists, members and employees of various geological institutions: Croatian Geological Society, PETRA Association, Croatian Geological Survey, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Science, Croatian Natural History Museum, INA Oil Industry d.d., Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, etc.

In 2013, the Ministry of Science and Education approved the approval for the implementation of this workshop in the school curriculum.
